Michael Flaherty is a senior vice president at Gladstone Place Partners, where he advises companies on shareholder activism defense and preparation, M&A, corporate governance and reputation management.
Michael’s activist engagement experience includes advising AT&T on its engagement with Elliott Management, advising Citigroup on its engagement with ValueAct Capital, and Cars.com during Starboard Value’s campaign for change.
His M&A advisory work includes ADT Security’s $600 million partnership with Google Nest, Spark Therapeutics’ antitrust review for its sale to Roche, Barrick Gold’s pursuit and joint venture with Newmont Mining and The Walt Disney Company’s $71 billion acquisition of the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox. He has also worked on corporate communications and investor relations mandates for companies such as Accenture, DXC Technology, Pfizer and GE.
Before joining Gladstone Place, Michael spent 14 years as a journalist for Reuters News. As a reporter, Michael covered a range of beats in Reuters’ New York, Hong Kong and Washington D.C. bureaus, including companies, M&A, private equity, finance, regulation and the Federal Reserve. During his final years at Reuters, he was the activist hedge fund and corporate governance reporter. Michael also served as the Editor-in-Charge for Reuters’ Asia finance team.
Michael earned a bachelor’s degree in History and English at Bowdoin College. He has served as a part-time lecturer at Rutgers University and is currently the head coach and a board director of the Jersey Shore Youth Rugby Association. Michael also coaches girls’ lacrosse and little league baseball in Holmdel, NJ, where he lives with his wife and family.
