Michael Flaherty is a senior vice president at Gladstone Place Partners, where has advised companies on shareholder activism defense and preparation, M&A, corporate governance communications, CEO transitions and reputation management. His activist work includes advising AT&T on its engagement with Elliott Management, Travelport on Elliott’s investment and eventual purchase of the company, and Cars.com during Starboard Value’s campaign for change.
Michael’s M&A work includes advising Spark Therapeutics during its antitrust review for the company’s sale to Roche, Barrick Gold’s pursuit and eventual joint venture with Newmont Mining and The Walt Disney Company on its $71 billion acquisition of the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox. He has also worked on corporate communications and investor relations mandates for companies such as Accenture, Pfizer and GE.
Before joining Gladstone Place, Michael spent 14 years as a journalist for Reuters News. As a reporter, Michael covered a range of beats in Reuters’ New York, Hong Kong, and Washington D.C. bureaus, including companies, M&A, private equity, finance, regulation and the Federal Reserve. During his final years at Reuters, he was the activist hedge fund and corporate governance reporter. Michael also served as the Editor in Charge for Reuters’ Asia finance team and news file.
Michael earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in History and English at Bowdoin College. He has served as a part-time lecturer at Rutgers University and is currently the head coach and a board director of the Jersey Shore Youth Rugby Association. He also coaches girls lacrosse and little league baseball in Holmdel, NJ, where he lives with his wife and family.
